Meet the Team

Am Sandford

Creative Director

In a career spanning more than 2 decades, Am started out, covering headline news incl. the 2004 Tsunami, political unrest in Thailand & Myanmar, to the 2017 Thai cave rescue and the current ongoing anti-coup conflict in Myanmar.

News hi-lights include the 2017 Rohingya crisis, the award - winning coverage of Thailand’s 2014 surrogate baby scandal and Am's key role as Cultural Advisor in the critically - acclaimed Netflix Thai Cave Rescue series, released in 2022.

In 2024, Am’s recognition as a leading producer/researcher was highlighted with her contribution to the Emmy award -winning Nat Geo series, Tsunami:Race against Time, DIR by Daniel Bogado.

As a TV producer & Field researcher for global networks, Am’s gained the trust of leading newsmakers in SE Asia, delivering accurate, compelling current affairs & documentaries.

As manager of AsiaReports, Am covers the full gamut - from coverage of breaking news, contacting newsmakers for interviews to long-form documentaries for production houses and major networks.

Aun Kumpera

Logistics & Travel

When he’s not biking up mountains or hitting the hills with his motocross motorcycle, Aun can be found driving the Asia Reports team to remote locations, primarily in Thailand and the Myanmar border region.

Familiar with the region's top destinations, Aun and his network of local drivers and translators can get to locations in the quickest routes - not always posted on GPS devices.

Steve Sandford

Director of Photography

After 10 years as a press photographer in Canada, Steve re-settled in Asia covering major world events, from Indonesian President Suharto’s fall in 1998 to Aung San Sui Kyi’s rise to leader of Myanmar in 2016 - and the brutal 2021 Burma army coup.

Transitioning from photo to video in 2007, Steve filmed primarily for Aljazeera news, covering much of SE Asia before forming Asia Reports in 2010 - covering news, current affairs, NGO

& documentaries.

With a focus on political, environmental & human rights issues, the region has provided plenty of challenges to film & document - but worth the added effort.

Coverage of Border patrols & Bangkok’s federal drug center by the Asia Reports team helped garner SHA Productions an Asian Academy Creative award in 2025. (ADDICTED: 3-part series)

Expanding into fiction TV & multi-media series continues to provide new, exciting challenges as Asia Reports moves forward.
